After Dylan, I put a hold on most of my problems (and my hormones) and bulldozed through the next year. I had enough of men, secrets, and sex in dark corners. I wanted to yell, “Baby Come Back!” as the Players sang but Dylan seemed far removed from me. All the deception and guilt made me tired and cynical. I needed more in a relationship and I still hadn’t figured out how to achieve my dreams.

I returned to college. I worked during the day and went to school at night, almost every night, and on weekends. I took 12-15 hours of college classes every semester (every nine weeks) and spread my mind instead of my legs, for a change. Chris went back to school too, which gave us something to share, if only in theory.

My twenty-fourth birthday passed as did my fifth wedding anniversary. My world became work, school, study, and sleep. No time for movies or television. No time for social occasions, unless it was business. I sussed out my courses, studied hard, and excelled with perfect grades. This only widened the chasms between Chris and me.

Argument was the dessert that followed our meals and jealousy was the source. Chris was always a highly competitive man when he thought he could win. But his insecurities and self-made inadequacies reared themselves every time he made a B to one of my A’s. He hoped for less, and pouted and sulked over my success. It was tiring.

My frustrations increased when he tried making me feel guilty about my achievements. I deserved praise and support, not distraction or harassment. Things were getting ugly as Chris railed on.
